What is the PlanetEsme Bookroom?

This private, non-circulating library and literary salon geared toward parents and elementary school teachers is dedicated to the principles found in How to Get Your Child to Love Reading by Esmé Raji Codell. Among them:
  • Reading is more than a skill; it's a lifestyle.
  • You can be your child's best teacher using children's literature.
  • No child is a lost cause when it comes to books any more than someone is a lost cause when it comes to falling in love; it's all about making the right connections.

The bookroom is run in the spare time of author and children's readiologist Esmé Raji Codell. Esmé is the author of award-winning books for adults and children and a national speaker on the subject of literacy and teacher empowerment. She has eighteen years of experience in the field of children's literature, and she is the site director for PlanetEsme.com, an ad-free site which has been in existence since 1999 and received over five million hits since its inception. The bookroom, started in 2004, is the physical manifestation of this marvelous place in cyberspace.

The primary purpose of the space is to serve as an inspiration, resource and meeting place for grown-ups who wish to deliver the best to children through read-aloud and literature-based education. Though the bookroom is primarily a resource center for adults, though we welcome well-behaved school-aged children (4 and up) who are accompanied by a guardian. At this time, we do not have regular hours open to the public and we are not available for school field trips, birthday parties or visits by pre-school children; hopefully, as resources become available, we can expand our hours and our space to meet the need of this enthusiastic community. Meanwhile, adults and school-aged children can visit "Chicago's literary living room"by attending some of the special events, which will be posted here periodically, and also noted on Esme's blog. At this time, membership is not required to attend these marvelous events, but please RSVP using the events hotline, 773-764-3710 or via e-mail.
Can't wait to see you there!
